Frequently Asked Questions

What is treatment-resistant depression (TRD)?

Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) is when you have depression and you have an inadequate response to at least two antidepressant treatments. TRD doesn’t mean that there isn’t a treatment that will work for you; it just means that the treatments you have tried so far have not worked for your depression.

The Axis Integrated Mental Health team can help you find a treatment that works for you.

What is major depressive disorder (MDD)?

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) or clinical depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. MDD can change how you think and behave, causing challenges in daily activities.

According to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO), depressive disorders are a leading cause of  mental disability in the world. In 2008, clinical depression ranked number three as the cause of the burden of mental disability worldwide.

Is Spravato the same as ketamine?

The active drug in Spravato is esketamine. Esketamine and ketamine are not the same things.

Ketamine is comprised of two mirror-image molecules: R-ketamine and 5-ketamine (which is known as esketamine). Therefore, Esketamine is one-half of the molecular compound within ketamine.

Spravato, when used in combination with another antidepressant medication, is approved for use by the U.S. F.D.A. for treating adults with TRD and MDD.

How long does it take for a new medication to work?

How long it takes a new medication to work depends on the type of medication you are taking. It generally takes a few weeks to start to feel the effects of medication and longer to get complete relief.

The team at Axis Integrated Mental Health offers medication management services. It can help you understand how long it will take for your medication to work and help you monitor your meditation's impact on your mental health condition.

What is TMS?

Transcranial magnetic stimulation, or TMS, is a cutting-edge and highly effective form of brain stimulation therapy that is FDA-approved for treating major depressive disorder (MDD). TMS is also FDA-approved for treating other conditions, such as Parkinson’s disease and anxiety.

Why weren’t my past medications effective?

Your past medications may not have effectively treated your depression or other mental health conditions because treating mental health conditions is complicated.

Medications are the first line of defense but are not the only treatment option for depression and other mental health conditions. Axis Integrated Mental Health can help you explore additional treatment options.

Are you accepting new patients?

If you are looking for a treatment partner for depression, seasonal affective disorder (SAD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), burnout, and Covid depression, we can help you.

What is an integrative approach to mental health?

An integrative approach to mental health includes the use of medication as well as evidence-based complementary therapies, such as Ketamine and TMS, as well as healthy lifestyle changes.
