Pictured is Andres Reinhard who provides therapy in Boulder

Andres Reinhard provides therapy in Boulder County at Axis Integrated Mental Health. Andres received his MA from Santa Clara University and has been a practicing therapist for over 6 years. His clinical interests and specialties include depression, PTSD, behavioral therapies for OCD, helping individuals with chronic health concerns, and men's issues. When working with patients, Andres uses a variety of therapeutic modalities (ACT, DBT, CBT to name just a few)  and he is actively working on Somatic Experiencing certification, a specific therapy modality designed to resolve symptoms of stress, shock, and trauma that accumulate in our bodies.

Q1: What inspired you to become involved with mental health?

A. While living in Germany in 2016, I had the opportunity to intern with a social services agency serving Iraqi and Syrian refugees who were fleeing war in the Middle East. I found it incredibly rewarding to help them apply for asylum, get them situated in Germany, and provide them with brief counseling sessions. Subsequently, I moved back to California and started a graduate program in psychology at Santa Clara University. From there, I found myself in Colorado and I am now happy to be able to provide therapy in Boulder County from my office in Louisville. It's been wonderful to be part of this community.

Q2: How do you spend your free time?

I love to be active. I frequently ski, backcountry ski, trail run, and rollerblade. There’s nothing like the great outdoors to help ground me.

Q3: What areas do you think are under-researched in mental health?

I believe that the efficacy of certain therapy modalities, such as psychodynamic therapy, should get more attention. Jonathan Shedler, Phd, has done some great research showing that it is as effective, if not more effective, than manualized treatments such as CBT. Helping patients with emotional expression, interpersonal relations, and the dynamics of the therapy relationship can unlock life-changing insights. Psychotherapy is more than just treating symptoms; it is a process by which to help people regain a sense of purpose and improve their self-efficacy. It normalizes the humanness in us all.

Q4: What’s your guilty pleasure?

I absolutely love chocolate. I also have a knack for binge-watching TV shows, such as Game of Thrones and Mad Men.

Q4: If there was one thing that you could get more patients to do to take care of their mental health, what would it be?

First, Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs comes to mind. Take care of the basics  – sleep, exercise, and nutrition. These are often overlooked and can do wonders for your mental health. Second, address unrealistic expectations of yourself. No one is perfect yet so many people struggle in their day-to-day life with perfectionistic tendencies.

Finally, if you're looking for therapy in Boulder, or med management, or new treatments for depression, come see us! You can schedule a visit at Axis in 7 days or less; we take most insurance plans. You do not need to book a psychiatrist or get a referral to see me. You can book a therapy appointment with me directly by clicking the button below either in-person or via telehealth.

Q5: Do you have any tips for managing your mental health?

I think PodCasts are an under-utilized resource. The Huberman Lab PodCast, for example, can provide great insights into science-based tools to help people improve their mental health. For those of you who are in committed relationships, try to spend 1-2 hours each week with your partner to check-in with them. Ask them how they are? How they truly are, no matter how hectic life gets. We need to remain connected.

Q6: When you are not providing therapy in Boulder County, do you have any hobbies, projects or side hustles that you’re passionate about?

I am learning French. I took some classes in college but recently decided to start classes locally.

Q7: What’s the phone app you use the most?

The Apple Music App (sorry not a Spotify user). Music is a huge part of my daily life, and like exercise, keeps me grounded.

Q8: What’s a book you think everyone should read?

Easy! Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl.
