Somewhere between the second scroll and the third cup of coffee, the holidays stop being something you do and start being something you are graded on. The table is not styled. The lights are not synced. The cookies came from a box. None of this would bother you in March, but in December it lands differently, and comparison has a way of turning a perfectly good evening into evidence against yourself.
This list is from our 2026 Holiday Wellness Survival Kit, and it is intentionally a little silly. Each trigger comes with the reality most of us are actually living, and a reframe you can borrow. If you recognize yourself in more than three of these, you are in good company.
Staying Sane When Instagram ‘Perfection’ Meets Real Life
The holidays can be a minefield for Comparisonitis. From ‘Hallmark movie’ romances to perfectly curated gifts on social media, it’s easy to feel like everyone else is doing it ‘better.’ Are they real? More often than not. The ‘perfect’ moments you see are curated illusions. This infographic highlights common triggers that get under your skin. It also guides you on how to feel more grounded, connected, and truly present this season.
The Martha Stewart Monologue
Trigger: “That little voice says, ‘Martha would add rosemary sprigs to this table.'”
Reality: Meanwhile, you’re dishing out pizza using toast and ketchup and calling it “rustic.”
Reframe: Refuse to do what Martha does unless you’ve also got Martha’s team working for you.
The Pinterest Diwali Rangoli Fail
Trigger: Replicating the aesthetic and perfect handmade Diwali Rangoli design on Pinterest.
Reality: Ended up looking more like abstract art or a scribble from a kid’s sketchbook.
Reframe: The joy’s in the doing! Your holiday doesn’t need to be Pinterest-worthy to be meaningful.
Griswold-Style Neighbor Showdown
Trigger: The Pattersons sync up to ‘Jingle Bell Rock’ and cover every square inch of their house.
Reality: Meanwhile, your single strand of twinkling lights flickers on and off in no particular rhythm.
Reframe: You’re “Holiday-ecofriendly”, not low-budget. If your lights make you happy, that’s all the glow you need this season.
The Potluck Superstar
Trigger: That one colleague showed up with an Instagram-ready Charcuterie platter of Parisian cheese, Italian fruits, and dips made from herbs cultivated from their organic garden.
Reality: You brought slightly crushed Oreos
Reframe: At least yours come with a dash of honesty. Store-bought cookies? They’re the ‘vintage charm.’
The Picture-perfect Holiday Card
Trigger: Friends send holiday cards with coordinated outfits that would make the Kardashians jealous.
Reality: You’re wrapped in a blanket, sipping cocoa in sweatpants, wondering if you even took a single photo this year.
Reframe: Has anyone ever regretted the comfort of sweatpants? Were Spanx required for any photos you took? If not, you’re already winning.
The Bow, Tape, and Sparkle
Trigger: A friend’s Instagram post with gifts decked out with satin ribbons, hand-lettered tags, and custom paper.
Reality: Re-used Amazon gift bags.
Reframe: Call it minimalist chic, and don’t waste a minute stressing about the tape.
Hanukkah Menorah Perfectionism
Trigger: Your friend’s menorah looks like it belongs in a holiday catalog with candles perfectly placed.
Reality: Your menorah leans like it’s had one too many latkes with half-used candles.
Reframe: You’re recreating the same trials and tribulations of the first menorah and are, therefore, better at Channukah than anyone. It’s about the glow, not the symmetry.
The New Year’s Resolution Race
Trigger: Everyone’s posting about how they’ll train for a 42K marathon this year.
Reality: You’re hoping to just stick with a consistent bedtime.
Reframe: Remember, there is no path. The path is made by walking.
Fireplace Envy
Trigger: Scrolling past perfectly staged fireplaces with stockings and soft lighting…”
Reality: You’re huddling next to the radiator, candlelit, with mismatched socks drying beside you.
Reframe: Warmth is where you find it. Besides, radiators come with bonus socks-drying functionality.
The Matchy-Matchy Pajama Pic Crisis
Trigger: That Insta post of a family in perfectly coordinated pajamas by the tree…
Reality: You’re just happy you have a set of pajamas that don’t have holes in it.
Reframe: You’re teaching individuality instead of conformity.
Holidays don’t come with a rulebook. There’s no ‘right’ way to do them. They don’t have to look perfect to feel meaningful. Let yourself off the hook. So what if your cookies aren’t Instagram-perfect or your lights don’t have a soundtrack? Your holidays should be all about you. It should be just as you like it. Whatever the state!
The reframes above work because they interrupt a thought before it becomes a verdict. That is a skill, and like any skill, it gets easier with practice and harder when you are running on four hours of sleep. If the comparison loop has moved past your feed and into how you feel about yourself most days, that is something our therapists work on all winter, and it is covered by most insurance plans.
This list is one of the lighter sections of our 2026 Holiday Wellness Survival Kit. The rest covers boundaries, grief, breathwork, journal prompts, and a few places in Colorado worth leaving the house for. You can read the whole guide at axismh.com/holiday-wellness-survival-kit.
