Meet Samrawit Mersha, PMHNP-BC

Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner in Colorado

Samrawit Mersha, PMHNP-BC, MPH, is a board certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner accepting new patients in-person in Aurora, Colorado or via telehealth across Colorado. She delivers outpatient psychiatric care at Axis Integrated Mental Health and evaluates, diagnoses, and manages your full course of psychiatric care with empathy and compassion. She works with children, adolescents, and adults struggling with seasonal affective disorder (SAD), depression, anxiety, trauma related conditions, and bipolar disorders, pairing careful medication management with practical tools that help patients build coping skills that actually hold up in daily life. New patients are typically seen within seven days.

What Makes Samrawit’s Approach to Medication Management Different?

A lot of psychiatric care stops at the prescription pad. Samrawit’s does not. She believes medication works best when it is paired with a therapeutic component, so patients are not just managing symptoms, they are building the perspective and coping skills that keep progress going after the appointment ends. One belief she returns to often with patients: mood tends to follow behavior, not the other way around. Small, consistent actions, even when a patient does not feel like taking them, can move the needle on depression as much as a medication change. That is why her visits often include practical, doable steps alongside any prescription, such as a sleep target, a specific plan for movement, or a concrete way to stay socially connected. It is a more complete kind of medication management, built for patients who want lasting change, not just a refill.

A Collaborative, Evidence Based Approach to Psychiatric Care

Samrawit conducts comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and provides ongoing medication management for children, adolescents, and adults. Alongside medication, she offers brief psychotherapy and psychoeducation, helping patients understand not just what they are experiencing but why, and what to do about it.

Her clinical background also includes time in high acuity behavioral health nursing, where she supported patients through crisis intervention and complex psychiatric presentations. That experience shaped a calm, steady approach to even the most difficult moments in a patient’s care.

Samrawit works as part of Axis’s broader collaborative care team. When medication and therapy alone are not enough, she can refer within the practice to alternative depression treatments like Deep TMS or Spravato, so patients always have a next step rather than a dead end.

Who Samrawit Helps

Samrawit works with children, adolescents, and adults navigating depression, anxiety, trauma related conditions, and bipolar spectrum disorders. She is a strong fit for patients who want both medication support and a therapeutic component, rather than a short check-in focused only on prescriptions. She also works closely with families, therapists, primary care providers, and schools, so a patient’s whole support system stays informed. Samrawit is bilingual, which allows her to serve a wider range of patients and families across Colorado.

Background and Credentials

Samrawit earned her Master of Science in Nursing, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner track, from Regis University in 2023, graduating summa cum laude and receiving the university’s Academic Excellence Award. She also holds a Master of Public Health from Grand Canyon University, earned summa cum laude in 2017, and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Colorado Christian University, earned summa cum laude in 2012. She is board certified through the American Nurses Credentialing Center and holds independent practice authority as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in Colorado. Earlier in her nursing career, she also provided medical and psychiatric support in a substance use treatment setting, which broadened her understanding of complex, co-occurring conditions. She has been recognized as Employee of the Year and received Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health’s Award for Excellence in back-to-back years.

Why Samrawit Chose Psychiatry

Samrawit was drawn to psychology early on, fascinated by what shapes human behavior. She chose psychiatry specifically because it let her go further: to diagnose and to actively treat, using medication alongside other tools. Outside the clinic, she is a devoted film enthusiast, a soccer fan, and someone who values time with family and friends above almost everything else. She defines success today less by finished goals and more by impact, whether her work leaves people a little better off than she found them. That value shows up in every appointment she runs.
