Meet Madison Walter, PMHNP-BC
Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner in Denver, Boulder, and Westminster
At Axis Integrated Mental Health, we’re proud to introduce Madison Walter, PMHNP-BC, a board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner with over a decade of healthcare experience. Madison offers compassionate, evidence-based care for adults struggling with depression, anxiety, ADHD, trauma, bipolar disorder, substance use, and insomnia.
A Personal Journey into Mental Health Care
Madison’s path to psychiatry began after working as a critical care nurse in a high-acuity ICU during the COVID-19 pandemic. She saw firsthand how mental health impacts every patient’s recovery, and how limited access to psychiatric care often leaves people without the help they need.
Professional Training and Experience
Madison earned her nursing degree from the University of Kansas and her master’s as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner from Maryville University. She completed a postgraduate residency at the VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System, where she trained in:
- Outpatient psychiatry for complex conditions
- Substance Use Disorder treatment
- Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) for serious mental illness
- Primary care mental health integration
- Supervised experience with rTMS, esketamine, and ECT
- Evidence-based therapy
She has also served as Interim Director of Nursing at Gallus Medical Detox Center, where she gained significant experience delivering evidence-based care for patients in recovery.
Areas of Specialty
Madison treats a wide range of conditions with expertise in:
- Depression and anxiety – evidence-based medication management and therapy support
- ADHD in adults and teens – careful evaluation, treatment planning, and practical skills for everyday life
- Insomnia and sleep disorders – Integrating principles of CBT-I (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia)
- Substance use disorders – including Medication for Addiction Treatment (MAT)
- Bipolar disorder, PTSD, and trauma – trauma-informed and recovery-focused care
- Women’s mental health – with advanced training in reproductive psychiatry
Her Approach to Care
Madison believes good psychiatry blends science with humanity. She combines medication management, evidence-based therapies, and lifestyle strategies such as movement, mindfulness, and sleep hygiene.
Her philosophy is rooted in empathy, respect, and collaboration. Patients describe her as calm, approachable, and someone who listens deeply. Her goal is to help every patient feel supported, understood, and capable of meaningful change.
Outside the Clinic
When she’s not seeing patients, Madison enjoys hiking, camping, and skiing in the Colorado mountains with her husband and their dog, Benny. She also loves exploring new restaurants and reading.
